This year's hajj has witnessed a death toll surpassing 1,000, according to an AFP tally released on Thursday. More than half of those who died were unregistered worshippers who performed the pilgrimage in extreme heat in Saudi Arabia.
On Thursday, new reports of deaths included 58 from Egypt, as detailed by an Arab diplomat. Out of a total of 658 deaths reported from Egypt, 630 were among the unregistered pilgrims.
Overall, approximately 1,081 deaths have been reported by around 10 countries during the annual pilgrimage, which is one of the five pillars of Islam that all Muslims must complete at least once if they have the means.
